My Favorite Coffee Trends of 2020
2020 has brought with it a lot of sleepless nights and uncertainty. What do we do during times like these? Drink. Not just alcohol my friends. Lots and lots of coffee. We drink hot coffee in the morning, a little iced coffee pick me up in the middle of the day. Why not just throw in a cappuccino after dinner. I'm sure I am torturing my coffee lovers right now. Let’s get into the topic of today’s blog: 2020 coffee trends.
When I moved to Charleston I noticed the trend towards sustainability (great trend I must add). One of my favorite coffee spots here, The Brown Fox, uses uncooked pasta noodles as straws rather than plastic. This idea is so fun and so much better than paper straws. It is really a no brainer! Dunkin Donuts moved away from plastic straws this year and Starbucks “sippy cups” have become widespread.
Whipped coffee took the internet by surprise during quarantine as some of the best, most overlooked coffee. Dalgona whipped coffee is a masterpiece made when you whip equal amounts of instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water until creamy. Then add this cream creation to hot or cold milk and there you have it! This coffee is a no brainer. Here is my favorite Dalgona whipped coffee recipe on the internet by FeelGoodFoodie: https://feelgoodfoodie.net/recipe/whipped-coffee/
In 2020 many people are moving towards plant based lifestyles. The vegan and dairy free lifestyles easily substitute whole milk for alternatives including almond, coconut, soy, oat and many other types of milks. This is in many cases healthier, less calories, and is also easier on the stomach. It is very common for people to have lactose intolerance, so these new alternatives to milk, creamer, and even whipped cream are awesome! My all time favorite whole milk alternative is oat milk as it is creamy, thick and sweet compared to other alternatives. Try some of these out if you are trying to switch things up!
The last trend I have noticed during 2020 is interesting new flavor shots. I want to preface this by stating I am sure these flavors have been around before 2020, but they have definitely become widespread and are more mainstream as of this year. These interesting flavors include charcoal, lavender, and maple vanilla shots. Add any of these to a latte and you will have the perfect fall drink (if you are willing to step away from the pumpkin spice latte). Charcoal is great at removing toxins from the body. Lavender is a calming agent and anxiety reducer. Maple vanilla just tastes delicious. Why not give it a go!
